Eastern women suffer first loss
The Eastern Washington women saw one win streak come to an end but began another in a pair of non-conference basketball games last week.
In Corvallis, EWU lost its first game of the season 73-66 to the PAC-12 Beavers, Nov. 17. Eastern returned home and led start to finish to record a 90-44 win over the NAIA Evergreen State College Geoducks, Nov. 20 at Reese Court.
Three Eagles scored in double figures led by Jacinta Buckley’s game-high 15 points against Evergreen. Jaleesa Lawrence scored 12 and Jaydia Martin had 11. Lawrence’s output was part of 42 bench points.
Oregon St. held a 38-34 lead at the break, but the Beavers opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run to build a cushion that held to the end.
Jamie Loera had a double-double with 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds for Eastern. Lawrence again came off the bench and scored 16 points.
Eastern, 4-1, is off until Saturday, Nov. 26 when they play Gonzaga in Spokane at 2 p.m. ––
VOLLEYBALL:
Eastern earns tournament berth
Eastern Washington volleyball accomplished what needed doing as the Eagles closed out the 2022 regular season with a pair of matches at Reese Court last weekend.
Eastern needed at least one victory to qualify for the Big Sky Conference tournament and got that Nov. 19 with a 3-0 win over Northern Arizona. The previous night the Eagles were defeated by defending champion Northern Colorado 3-2.
Eastern is off to the postseason tournament at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah from Wednesday, Nov. 23 to Saturday, Nov. 26. The Eagles are 6-10 in conference and 11-17 overall.
In registering the win against NAU [25-18, 25-17, 25-23] Eastern had three players put up double figures in kills, led by Alyssa Radke’s 14. Sadie Bacon delivered 11 and Renata Lopez Morales added 10. Lindsey Russell recorded 35 assists.
Against UNC, Renata Lopez Morales had a season-high, 15 kills, one shy of her career best. Lindsey Russell recorded 39 assists and nearly had a double-double with eight digs as Eastern fell [25-14, 25-16, 11-25, 19-25, 9-15].
