This Week in history
This week, in 1924, the Cheney Free Press moved its press and offices to the Masonic temple in the heart of town. “After the move is completed,” the editor wrote, “the Free Press will have without doubt, the best newspaper office and printing establishment of any town this size in the state.”
The article goes on to boast of the variety of type-sets available and the new equipment that will contribute to the performance of the company.
The Cranston newspaper press, the heart of the new press room, could print upwards of 1,800 papers an hour. For comparison, our modern press here today can run over 14,000 an hour.
In an adjacent section, the print-master was careful to entreat readers to be patient with any defects in the paper, or tardiness of delivery, as they were printing “under difficulties.”
