12th Annual Artists Studio Tour for the west plains cities

CHENEY – The Slightly West of Spokane artists tour will begin in Medical Lake, venture through Four Lakes, and end in Cheney. The tour itself is a showcase of eight local artists whose art is displayed in six studios across the west plains.

The tour is self guided, and will take place Saturday Nov. 26 from 10a.m. to 5p.m. Many different styles and mediums will be on display at the various studios and all are encouraged to engage.

Gwyn Pevonka, one of the three newest artist to be featured, said "I live in Medical Lake and I walk around the city often. I met Dennis, an artist in collective, and he invited me to his studio."

This took place in 2021, and Gwyn was invited by Dennis to participate in this year's tour.

"The west plains is known for its new-American craft movement. My style leans toward the abstract and contemporary end of the spectrum, and I thought that would bring a different dimension of art to the collective."

"I knew I wanted to be an artist after my parents bought me my first isle. I have been creating art of this style for about 13 years. It's become an obsession." Pevonka said.

Pevonka's style is characterized by layering different types of paint, one a day, for weeks or months on end. She then carves at the finished product to reveal the layers in a relief-style pattern. A "painstaking" process that involves focusing for an extended period of time.

Much of Pevonka's artistic style is informed by her name, translated as beautiful flower in Czech. "Much of the content I make is inspired by that heritage; you'll see girls holding flowers or walking in fields of pretty flowers."

"My style has been evolving for a long time, and I am happy to be a part of this west plains artist collective." Pevonka said.
