BASKETBALL:

Eastern men fall at Santa Clara

Eastern Washington men’s basketball began its 2022-23 season Nov. 7 with a 84-72 loss at Santa Clara of the West Coast Conference.

Angelo Allegri led the Eagles with 19 points, Tyreese Davis added another 12 while Casey Jones recorded his first career double-double, scoring 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Turnovers were a major factor in the game, as Eastern had 16 that led to 24 points for the Broncos.

Eastern will next compete in the Outrigger Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Hawai’i, starting Friday, Nov. 11 against Yale. The Eagles play host Hawaii Nov. 13. The tournament concludes on Monday, Nov. 14 against Mississippi Valley State.

Eastern women win opener

Eastern Washington women’s basketball defeated Corban University, 86-47 Nov. 7 at Reese Court to open its season.

Jaydia Martin scored 17 points to lead the Eagles. Aaliyah Alexander made her first start appearance since spring of 2021 and scored 15 points with Jamie Loera adding 10 points.

Eastern travels to meet Boise State on Nov. 11.

Vandals roll over Eagles in Kibbie Dome

Somewhere the memory of 2021’s trip to Cheney and Eastern Washington 71-21 rout of Idaho might have sat in the Vandal’s memory?

Because while they did not match the 50-point margin, Idaho’s 48-16 Big Sky Conference football win over Eastern Nov. 5 inside the Kibbie Dome sent a message.

Hayden Hatten tied a Vandal record with four touchdown catches, all in a row, pacing Idaho to a 28-10 lead at halftime.

Eastern got touchdowns from Nolan Ulm — an 87-yard catch and run — cutting the Idaho lead to 21-10 in the second quarter. Freddie Roberson jetted 75 yards on a Gunner Talkington pass in the fourth quarter to make it a 41-16 game.

Wyatt Hawkins’ 35-yard field goal came on Eastern’s first drive and gave the Eagles their lone lead, 3-0.

Talkington finished 15 of 25 for 232 yards and two touchdown passes. Ulm caught three passes for 99 yards. Keshaun King and Tre Weed had interceptions for Eastern which won the turnover battle 2-0. Eastern drops to 66-3 since 2010 when winning the turnover battle.

The Eagles fall to 1-5 in the Big Sky and 2-7 overall this season. Idaho improves to 5-1 in conference and 6-3 overall. Eastern visits Montana Nov. 12 for a noon kickoff at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

VOLLEYBALL:

Eastern swept by ISU, Weber

Eastern Washington returned winless formats road trip to face Idaho State and Weber State in Big Sky Conference volleyball.

The Eagles lost 3-1 to the Bengals Nov. 3 in Pocatello and 3-0 in Ogden to the Wildcats.

Alyssa Radke had a game-high 16 kills against ISU. The game is Radke’s third-straight with 15 or more kills. Sage Brustad recorded 13 kills and now has double digit kills in 16 of the team’s 23 games. Lindsey Russell had 41 assists and now has 10 games with 40 or more assists.

Against Weber Brustad was had a game-high in kills for EWU with 12. Makenna Collins recorded 13 digs against the Wildcats for her 15th game this season with double digit digs.

The Eagles record now sits at 4-8 in the Big Sky and 9-15 overall. They will take its final road trip of the regular season when they travel to play Sacramento State (Nov. 10) and Portland State (Nov. 12).
