Cheney concluded its regular season with a 28-20 non-league win over the Eisenhower Cadets, Oct. 28 in Yakima.
The Blackhawks got a pair of short touchdown runs from Jakeb Vallance and an insurance pick-6 interception return by defensive end Miles Hoover to seal things for a 3-6 overall record. Cheney will board the bus once again to meet Hermiston, Oregon Nov. 4 in a cross-over match up.
Cheney led 13-7 at half-time following Vallance’s first score and a 30-yard pass to Camden Collins. The Blackhawks scored on their first drive, but things turned sour after that according to head coach Bobby Byrd.
“We were able to move the ball at will, but penalties got in the way,” he wrote in an email. “There were 16 total penalties and four touchdowns called back which made for a slow game.”
Outside of three big plays the defense played “Lights out,” Byrd said. “We had three big takeaways from Tyler Ashcroft with an interception and fumble recovery,” against the Cadets (1-5 Big Nine, 1-8 overall).
Vallance was 24 of 34 for 224 yards and an interception while Josh Bingham caught 13 passes for 108 yards.
“It was good to get this road trip under our belts in preparation for a big test this week against Hermiston,” Byrd said. “Schematically, Hermiston is similar to but a much more physical.” The Bulldogs play in the 3A Mid-Columbia Conference where they finished 3-5 (3-6 overall) and sixth in the league.
