Library in need of new entryway

CHENEY – City Administrator Mark Schuller noted at council meeting on Oct. 25 that the city library entryway needs to be replaced.

Ongoing maintenance to this structure has helped to keep it in working order for over ten years. Now this regular maintenance can no longer sustain the electronic and mechanical components.

The city administrative budget indicates that approximately $39,000 is allocated to the library for various reasons.

However, Jane Baker, Communication & Development Director for Spokane county library district, said that “The key-less entry/access control upgrades the library district is planning is part of the district’s operations.”

City Administrator Mark Schuller stated in a city council meeting that “The project could cost upwards of $20,000.”

“We’re responsible for the building itself, which includes the entryway. We’ll pay for the door hardware, and the district will pay for the electronic mechanisms such as updates to security technology.”

This replacement project is a collaboration between the library district and the city of Cheney. “The updates really would just bring the security of the building to a current and acceptable standard.” Schuller said.
