Candidates
You are running against Deanna Crull as District Court Judge; what is an issue that you and she differ on concerning this position?
Both candidates in this race are rated exceptionally well qualified, as we both have ample legal and judicial experience. What sets me apart from Ms. Crull—and most judges—is my unique combination of legal and nonlegal experience. I have a degree in clinical psychology and worked as a case manager for more than five years with people with severe mental illness and behavioral disorders. My legal clients have also been largely people with disabilities, victims of scams, and those who have had their constitutional rights violated. All of these firsthand experiences are immensely valuable on the bench.
Deanna said that “I have found that properly addressing an individual’s underlying issues with early intervention has an impact.” Do you agree with this philosophy? If so, could you embody “interventionism in a better way?
It is absolutely critical that we work to address any underlying issues that cause criminal or dangerous behavior. If we fail to do this, we fail in our duty to protect the public because we are not lessening the chance of future misconduct and future victims. True accountability requires people to work on the causes of their harmful conduct. I have done the hands-on work of treating underlying conditions and making the community safer. I am well prepared to work in individual cases and systemically to intervene wherever possible to break cycles of trauma and provide treatment.
