Medical Lake 0-3 for week

Medical Lake limped through the conclusion of its Northeast A League girls soccer season, literally, finishing with an 8-3 loss at home to Freeman (Oct. 18) and 12-0 on the road at Lakeside.

“We are finally at the end of the regular season,” head coach Dan Collins wrote in an email. “We made it, but barely. I’ve had more injuries (concussions) and am down five starters.”

Domini Charon’s two goals in the second half, one in the 45th minute, and another four minutes later, helped the Cardinals end a string of five matches where they have been shutout. Isabelle Rhoads had the third goal. Aubrey Gregory scored four goals for Freeman (8-4 NEA, 8-6 overall) which led 7-0 at the half.

Lakeside (11-1, 12-3) scored six first half goals and matched that in the final 40 minutes with Bailey Bahr making 16 saves after blocking 17 against Freeman.

VOLLEYBALL:

Cheney wins on road at CV, falls to powerful Mead

Cheney volleyball split their Greater Spokane League matches last week winning where they might not have expected.

The Blackhawks (3-4 GSL, 9-4 overall) went on the road and defeated Central Valley 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-10, 15-11) as Navi Islam-Zwart delivered 16 kills.

“Playing away has been challenging for us this year,” head coach Heather Zorrozua wrote in an email. “Our Blackhawks leaned on each other and committed to working as a team to pull out the five-set road win,” over the Bears (0-7 GSL, 1-11 overall).

Charlie Rajewski, Tess King, and Ragan Harris, were singled out “For their momentum-shifting performances,” Zorrozua said.

The task got taller Oct. 20 when Cheney hosted the No. 2-ranked team in the state of Washington, Mead (7-0, 11-0), losing 3-0 (22-25, 17-25, 18-25). “We came out, fed off our home crowd,” Zorrozua said. Joy Assonken had 10 kills to lead the Blackhawks.

Hayleigh Ghering, Joy Assonkin and Sophie Coffin — all juniors — “Stepped up tonight,” according to Zorrozua, suggesting, “The future of the Blackhawks will be bright.”

Cheney closed out its GSL season this week hosting Gonzaga Prep (4-3, 7-7), Oct. 25 and then at North Central (1-6, 4-9), Oct. 27.
