Blackhawks' Calvin Hilton breaks 16-minute barrier
CHENEY - With Calvin Hilton logging a fifth-place finish - and breaking the 16-minute barrier - in a time of 15 minutes, 55.7 seconds, and Adam Estock just out of the top-10 (11th/16:18.9), Cheney's boys captured the team title at the Lewis & Clark XC Invitational in Estacada, Ore.
Jacob Friesen from Forest Grove won the individual title in a time of 15:26.1.
Run on the 5,000-meter Milo McIver State Park, the Blackhawks finished with 95 points to its nearest competitor, Sheldon High School from Eugene with 141 points. The Cheney girls were fifth with 169 points behind team champ Washougal at 141.
"(This was) a huge win for the boys and they were happy with their effort even without 2-3 runner Cameron Frenk," head coach Derek Slaughter wrote in an email.
Hilton broke the 16 min barrier for the first time in his career and is only the third runner to ever do it in the program. "Senior Adam Estock had a big day and big PR to help solidity the team win," Slaughter added.
On the girls' side Sam Habegger (24/20:38.0) was Cheney's top finisher behind North Salem freshman Nelida Dalgas time of 18:36.7.
"Seniors Mika Corneil recorded a finish of 21:51.4 (lifetime PR) and Tenaya Belsby's 21:18.0 (season best) were huge in moving their 1-5 pack up and getting ready for some battles to get to the post season," Slaughter said.
Following an Oct. 18 home Greater Spokane League meet that includes Gonzaga Prep and Ridgeline, the Blackhawks have until Oct. 29 to prepare for the District-8 championships in Walla Walla. The state meet is Nov. 5 in Pasco.
