Headrick PR’s at ‘Hole -in-the-Wall’

MEDICAL LAKE – In anticipation of their Northeast 1A League showdown at home on Oct. 12 against Lakeside, the Medical Lake cross country team took the week off from competition to train.

Well, most of the team that is.

Reid Headrick represented Medical Lake in the Nike Hole-in-the-Wall Invitational at Lakewood High School in Arlington, Wash. and ran in the prestigious 5,000-meter Elite Men’s race.

The senior finished 14th overall in a time of 15 minutes, 26.7 seconds and was the top 1A school finisher. The time was a notable personal record for Headrick. Zack Munson (14:55.5) from Sehome High was the individual champ.

SLOW PITCH:

Cheney wins one, loses two

CHENEY – Cheney concluded its week in Greater Spokane League slow pitch softball with a win and two losses and a pair of notable individual performances head coach Gary Blake reported.

The Blackhawks lost 7-0 at Gonzaga Prep (4-5 GSL, 5-6 overall) on Oct. 3 in a game Blake said, “Our defense wasn’t there, and our hitting wasn’t there.”

Cheney (3-8, 3-10) turned that around and defeated a Rogers (2-9, 4-10) team 12-7 that beat them in an earlier non-league match-up. Mia Ashcroft was 3 for 4 in the Oct. 4 contest, but for the week earned praise from Blake as she hit two doubles and a triple.

The week closed Oct. 6 with a 15-1 thumping by Mead (9-1, 11-1) in which Cheney was limited to just three hits. Things were going reasonably well with the Blackhawks trailing 6-0 until the errors cropped up and the Panthers scored nine runs in the sixth.

Another bright spot for the week was Cheney pitcher Olivia Huffman who threw 19 innings and only walked one batter. “The key to being a good slow pitch pitcher is not giving them anything they don’t earn, and walks are a big part of that.”

Cheney closed out regular season play with an Oct.10 game at Ferris (6-4, 7-5) and Oct. 11 vs. East Valley (1-10-, 1-11) in a doubleheader.

SOCCER:

CHS soccer wins, loses

CHENEY – The girls soccer team opened the week with a dominating 5-0 Greater Spokane League win over Lewis and Clark and finished dropping a 3-1 decision of Mt. Spokane.

Kaiti Low scored a hat trick against LC (5-1 GSL, 11-2 overall) and Alex Miller had two goals and an assist. Kiah Klauss had eight saves to earn the shutout for Cheney (2-4, 6-7).

“LC is a very good team, so it was crucial that we were able to get the early goal and keep attacking,” head coach Nels Radke wrote in an email.

Mt. Spokane led 2-0 before Ellie Barden scored in the 56th minute, assisted by Ellie Fisk, to close the gap. But the Wildcats’ Kami Ellis scored in the 80th minute to seal it.

“We outplayed Mt. Spokane (4-2, 7-3) the second half despite giving up another early goal in the half off of a PK (penalty kick), we hit the crossbar twice, and had several good looks at the goal,” Radkie said.

This week is a big week for Cheney, Radke explained of an Oct. 12 match at home under th lights at Tom Oswald Field with North Central (1-5, 3-5). “We are just ahead of NC in the standings so we need a win to get us closer to qualifying for playoffs,” he said.

And the atmosphere might be a bit different than your average contest?

“I also heard that NC is going to bring a spirit bus full of students to the game so we will need to have a big crowd to support our girls,” Radke said.
