Eastern loses second-half battle with Weber

Wildcats turn it on late to claim 45-21 win over Eagles in Ogden

Eastern Washington and Weber State went eye-to-eye and toe-to-toe for the better part of three quarters Oct. 8 at Stewart Stadium in Ogden, Utah.

Tied 21-21 following Mitchell Johnson's scoop-and-score fumble return with 7 minutes, 1 second left in the third, Weber State went on to score the next 24 points and rolled over Eastern 45-21 in a Big Sky Conference football game.

With the loss, Eastern falls to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference, while Weber State stays perfect at 2-0 and 5-0 overall.

"In the holistic look on the day, we captured momentum a lot and we just couldn't continue it," EWU head coach Arron Best said as he accessed his team's fourth consecutive loss. "There were times where our backs were against the wall; it just seemed like we captured momentum, but we couldn't continue it."

Eastern tied the game 7-7 on a Tuna Altahir 12-yard run with 10:55 remaining in the first quarter. Freddie Roberson's 27-yard TD catch from Gunner Talkington made it 14-all with 11:25 to play in the half.

Weber went to the break ahead 21-14 on Abraham Williams' 100 and return on the ensuing kickoff, a play that took just 12 second off the clock.

Talkington completed 21 of his 31 pass attempts, throwing for 198 yards plus one interception and one touchdown. Altahir set a new career-high in rushing yards for the second-straight game, leading the team with 81 yards on 19 carries, plus his second career touchdown. Nolan Ulm led the team with 52 receiving yards on four catches.

On the defensive side, Ely Doyle led the way with a career-high 12 tackles.

This is the first time since 2011 that EWU has lost four games in a row, and Weber State has now won four-straight over the Eastern.

Eastern returns home to host Sacramento State for Homecoming at Roos Field on Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is set for 4:02 p.m. with the game being televised regionally on SWX and ESPN+. The Hornets are currently ranked No. 5, and it will be the first matchup against Sacramento State since the 2019 season.
