CHENEY – During the Sept. 28 School Board meeting, Superintendent Ben Ferney reported that the Student Access and Safety Program at Cheney High School is going well.
The program is meant to foster student engagement with staff and build a safer and more positive environment. Its team consists of several specialists and two Airway Heights Youth Engagement Specialist police officers.
The team was in attendance during the Sept. 28 meeting.
The goal of the program is “building relationships and addressing the culture of the school district, establishing relationships with the students during the good times, so that when things get tough, they can lean on those relationships,” Ferney said. “Our students love these people and the positivity they bring to the school.”
Kennedy Himes, a sophomore at Cheney High School, said:
“The biggest difference I’ve noticed between last year and this year is that there’s a lot less fighting among the students. I feel that there are people here to protect me and keep me safe.”
The two officers, Pat Carbaugh and Brad King, remarked on the positive experiences they have had during their time at Cheney High School.
