CHENEY – The School Board unanimously approved a revised policy to improve the so-called “social emotional” school climate during a meeting Wednesday, Sept. 28.
Policy No. 3112 charges the superintendent with implementing “effective climate improvement process, including a continuous cycle of planning and preparation, evaluation, action planning and implementation.”
“This policy provides a framework that allows us to support students who otherwise would fall through the cracks,” board member Zachary Zorrozua said.
“Looking at their (state Social Emotional Learning Advisory Committee) meeting minutes, I am disturbed by their preamble,” resident Bill John said, noting it “shows a committee that is dedicated to critical race theory.”
The state committee was created to “disrupt the legacy of systemic racism” and direct “racial equity and justice” in schools.
The local policy was required under Revised Code of Washington 28A.345.085, mandating each district “model policy and procedure for nurturing a positive social and emotional school and classroom climate.”
