October is fire hydrant awareness month

CHENEY – Students from Eastern Washington University have been parking their vehicles improperly, obstructing fire hydrants and fire lanes. The number of incidents has increased dramatically since August.

“This year, parking in front of fire hydrants and in Fire Lanes is a problem at and around the EWU campus like we haven’t seen in a long time.” Said Fire Marshal Tim Steiner today, Sept. 28, 2022. The Fire Dept. has been circulating information on this issue in an attempt to inform the public. An excerpt can be seen below.

Additionally, it is a requirement that “If the fire hydrant is located on your property, it is your responsibility to maintain this clear area, and to notify the City if any vandalism occurs or repairs need to be done.”

FIRE HYDRANTS

Fire hydrants allow for easy access to water for fire suppression activities. Having an easily accessible, well maintained and visible system of hydrants throughout the city is vital to the operation of the fire department, the safety of citizens, and the protection of property. All of these are necessary to keep your fire insurance rates to a minimum.
