CROSS COUNTRY:

Cheney boys, girls claim XC wins

Cheney runners, both boys and girls, claimed two of three wins in a Greater Spokane League cross country quad dual Sept. 21 at Ferris.

The Blackhawk boys were victorious over North Central 25-32 and 16-45 vs. Ferris. Mead won its race with Cheney 23-34. The Cheney girls won a squeaker 27-29 over NC and 15-50 against Ferris, losing to Mead 15-50.

“On the guy’s side Adam Estock bounced back from a lackluster week-one to help run a solid No. 2 man for us,” head coach Derek Slaughter wrote in an email. Calvin Hilton finished second to a top GSL runner, Mead’s Noah Holden.

Slaughter also offered praise to the girls as a group. “We finally feel that had a full team effort on the same day,” he said. “All of the varsity seven deserve praise this week.

Cheney will have a true test Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Spokane Polo Grounds off of U.S. Highway 2 near Spokane International Airport in the Battle for the 509. “(That) will be the race to watch for time with 43 high schools in the race and a fast/flat course,” Slaughter said.
