Cheney soccer wins, loses tight matches

Blackhawks race past Rogers 13-0 on Miller’s 3 goals

Cheney soccer was, perhaps, within a shot of a perfect week.

The Blackhawks lost 3-2 on penalty kicks, Sept. 19 but followed with a 2-1 win over Central Valley (Sept. 21) and a rout of Rogers 13-0 on Sept. 24.

Tied at 2-2 on goals from Kayelee Kohlman in the 34th minute and Kaiti Low in the 77th minute — both assisted by Alex Miller — Cheney lost 3-2 on penalty kicks. “Emersyn Heuett and Paige Evens each made their penalty kicks and Kiah Klauss had a big save in the PK’s to keep us alive,” head coach Nels Radke wrote in an email.

“We showed a lot of character battling back twice in the U-High (1-1 GSL, 6-2 overall) game to go to overtime, especially in the 77th minute and it was important to be able to get a point out of that game towards our league standings,” Radke said.

Against CV (0-2, 0-6) in a rematch from the season opener where Cheney (1-1, 4-4) cruised 8-0, Kaiti Low scored off a free kick in the 22nd minute and Grace Grumbly converted a corner kick taken by Ellie Barden for the difference at 60 minutes.

“We seemed off on Wednesday at CV,” Radke explained. “I think this was a case of playing down to the level of your competition since we beat them 8-0 the first game of the season.”

The second half was a much better example of how Cheney could play, Radke said, noting the Blackhawks were able to earn an important three points in the standings with the win over the 4A school.

Cheney closed out the week with a score fest against Rogers leading 6-0 at the half. With a pair of goals from Miller and one from Barden, the Blackhawks led 3-0 just four minutes into the contest against 2A Rogers (0-1, 1-6-0).

When it was over with Cheney adding seven more goals in the second half, Miller had three goals and an assist while Low, Ellerie O’Regan and Ally Deutsch each added a pair of goals. Klauss and Clara Browne shared the shutout combining to make three saves.

Cheney faced what Radke called “A big week for us” as the Blackhawks got a rematch Sept. 26 with G-Prep (2-0, 6-2) whom they lost to 3-2 Sept. 14 and then traveled to Mead (1-1, 5-2) on Sept. 28.

Radke recalled, “It was this week last year when we had that big week that really turned our season around with wins over CV and GP-rep. Hopefully we are able to come up with similar results this year?”

Cheney concludes the week on Friday, Sept. 30 with a home match vs. 1A Lakeside at 4 p.m.
