SPOKANE-The U.S. Armed Forces Women escaped with a close 2–1 win over the German Bundeswehr team at Mead's Union Stadium Friday night, July 15, placing them within sight of the final championship rounds on July 22.
The victory was sweet revenge for returning players on the squad after their defeat at the hands of the Germans in the 2019 Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Games in Wuhan.
The American team pulled off the win after an uncertain first half, controlling possession but missing several shots on goal. The match's first score came when Army 1st Lt. Haley Roberson took possession and set up Capt. Kailey Utley, a four-year West Virginia starter, for a successful kick.
The fuss was knotted 1-1 until the game's 64th minute, when the only Marine on the U.S. roster, 1st Lt. Katie Gernsbacher, rocketed a shot past German keeper Gina-Marie Mitsche and into the back of the box. Gernsbacher played two seasons with the University of Texas and the University of North Texas.
Athletes in CISM sports are selected from active military units worldwide to represent their countries in various events. They train for several weeks before competing in international championships against teams from other nations' militaries. These events culminate in the Military World Games held every four years.
