CHENEY— The Summer Hawks dropped an 8-6 district playoff game to Colville on Saturday, July 16. The loss eliminated Cheney from postseason play. The Summer Hawks finished summer ball with a 17–17 record.
“I thought the summer was a huge success—we’re a very young team that competed in every game,” Coach Rod Beamer said. “The growth of these young men was amazing—the bright future for Cheney Baseball.”
Colville jumped out to a 3–0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Summer Hawks brought four runs across the plate with two outs in the bottom of the second to go up 4–3 and then added a run in the third inning to make it 5–3, Cheney.
The score held up until Colville erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, 8–5. The Summer Hawks added one run in the bottom of the sixth, but that was as close as they got and dropped a close 8-6 ball game.
Cheney outhit Colville seven to four in the contest. Jake Swanson led the Summer Hawks’ offensive effort going 2-for-3 at the dish with a run scored.

The Summer Hawks took an early 2–0 with two out in the top of the first on a base on balls and back-to-back singles by Jacob Ulrich and Marcus Belarde.
Shadle Park got all the runs the team needed bringing three runners home in the bottom of the inning. Shadle Park went on to post three runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to run away with it.
CDA 7
Cheney 3
This one was all Lumbermen, as the team from Couer d’ Alene led 3–0 early and was up 7–0 heading into the top of the seventh inning. The Summer Hawks escaped the shutout with three runs in the inning, two of which were unearned.
Ashcroft went the distance on the hill, giving up seven runs, five earned, off seven hits.
