Uptick in Washington COVID cases

CHENEY—The Associated Press reported on July 2 that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending people in six Washington counties should begin wearing masks indoors in public and on public transportation again due to an increase in COVID cases.

According to the latest information from the CDC, Spokane County, Lewis County, Pacific County, Thurston County, Grays Harbor County and Garfield County all have COVID-19 community levels rated “high,” meaning they have had 200 or more new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people in the last seven days, or they’ve had more than 20 new COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people within a seven-day period.

Kelli Hawkins, public information officer at the Spokane Regional Health District, said they’ve been watching the levels and support the CDC’s recommendation to mask up at public events and on public transportation.

“We’ve been watching the levels,” she said. “They’re high and they’ve been high for a couple of weeks.”

Hawkins said the Spokane Regional Health District encourages people in Spokane County to consider masking up at public events and hosting large gatherings.
