Restaurants face off in Battle of the Burgers

CHENEY— Who has the best burgers in town? Your chance to weigh in happens July 2-8 when six local eateries go head-to-head in the Battle of the Burgers. The event leading up to the Cheney Rodeo is sponsored by Eagle Bites. The participating restaurants are Bene’s, Eagle’s Pub, Wild Bill’s Long Bar, Marketplace Restaurant & Amish Store, Lenny’s Classic and Yokes.

“Saturday through Friday will be the community event. On the days that the contenders are open, they can serve their burger for the community to purchase under $12.99,” said Eagle Bites Manger Carin Blair-Hoobler. “When they order from their first location, they’ll get a score card with a list of all six contenders that they can keep until the official judging day on July 9 after the rodeo parade.”

Locals will be able to cast their votes along with the five official judges— Kris Kilduff, Travis Wical, Maria Fell, Elizabeth Strieff and Fire Chief Tom Jenkins.

“People can order their burgers for delivery through Eagle Bites or actually go in and try them,” Blair-Hoober said. “This is about supporting local businesses and getting people out and staying in Cheney.”

Her plan is to get a group of friends together, get one burger from each competitor and do a taste test at the park while they wait to get back over to the rodeo.

Alan Gainer, the general manager of Lenny’s Classic on 1st Street admits his competitors are capable of making a good burger, but confidently added none will come close to what they will produce.

“It’s something unique and no one is going to have it,” he said. “On July 5 when we open, they’re going to know it. When they take a bite out of this thing— you’re going to have to try and find someone who doesn’t like it.”

Gainer spoke to the impressive talent of his competitor at Eagle’s Pub but is sure that Lenny’s will be crowned winner of the Battle of the Burgers.

“Mike at Eagle’s Pub is good at this too but he won’t have this burger either,” he said. “My son came up with this idea [for the burger]. I’m looking forward to this.”
