CHENEY- A gas leak on Tuesday morning near Salnave Elementary led to the evacuation of staff and nearby residents. Cheney Fire Department and emergency personnel responded to the incident around 10 a.m. after receiving a call from the Cheney School District.
"Someone at Salnave Elementary smelled the gas and based on the wind and the levels we were getting, we evacuated two blocks," Cheney Fire Chief Tom Jenkins said. "A private contractor was driving a dump truck full of gravel. When he or she was lowering the dump truck bucket, it must've nicked the gas line. They wouldn't have known that because they would've lowered the bucket and kept moving to dump the gravel."
Avista Utilities was on scene to cap the broken gas line.
"Avista responded quickly and in 15 to 20 minutes we were able to clear it and let residents go back into their homes."
There were no reports of injury.
