Summer Hawks split first four games

CHENEY—The Cheney Boys of summer took on the Colfax Bulldogs in doubleheader action on Wednesday, June 1 and came away with a split of the twin bill. The Summer Hawks took the first game 6–1 and were shut out 3–0 in the nightcap.

Cheney batters combined for 10 hits in 38 plate appearances. Tate Hueschkel went the distance in Game 1, giving up a run off three hits and fanning six batters.

The Summer Hawks dropped a 12–7 game to Gonzaga Prep on Monday, June 6. Prep led 5–2 after two innings were in the books and added two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the seventh to blow it open, 10–4. Cheney posted three on the board in the bottom of the seventh to make it respectable.

Mt. Spokane 5

The Summer Hawks put a 19–5 hurtin’ on Mt. Spokane on Wednesday, June 8. Mt. Spokane led 5–4 at the bottom of the fifth frame. Cheney batted around twice in the top of the sixth and scored 15 runs off five hits, five walks and three hit batters.

Now at 2–2 in the early summer season, coach Rob Beamer likes what he see’s from his team.

“We are pretty young, but we’re hitting the ball well,” he said. “We’re playing solid defense and pitching well too.”

Cheney was back on the diamond at home Wednesday to match up with the North Central wolf Pack. Look for the results in the June 23 issue of the Cheney Free Press.
