Community Transition Program celebrates 2022 grads

CHENEY-Cheney School District Community Transition Program (CTP), designed to provide more independence and life readiness skills to students with disabilities between 18-21 years old, celebrated six students on Wednesday night at Cheney Middle School.

This year's CTP graduates are Aaron Brammer, Calissa Kaley, Christian Rivera Perez, Ethan Rogers, Braxton Seitzinger and Zander Ziolkowski.

Franklin Day, director of student support services, said all had spent 18 years in school to get to graduation day.

"A lot of these students have been in school since they were 3 years old. This is a culmination of 21 years of life for these students," he said. "All of them are turning 21 or are already 21."

Day said students spend half of their days in the classroom and three hours a day in their internships offered by businesses in the community.

"What makes this special is that this is a partnership with the community," he said. "These students have internships with community businesses."

Day said the internships had offered students an opportunity to grow their work and interaction skills.

"This [program] is part of the community and the students will be too when they graduate," Day said. "This is something we're very proud of."
