Cheney Track sends 12 to State

CHENEY—Cheney Track and Field athletes turned in an outstanding performance at the 3A/4A District 8 Championship Meet May 20–21 at Central Valley High School. Several personal records were set at the event, and 12 athletes qualified for the WIAA State Championship Meet on May 26–28 at Mount Tahoma Stadium.

“The weather threw everyone for a loop, but we had an amazing weekend. Each team placed fifth,” Coach Derek Slaughter said. “We had a lot of athletes beat their rankings and that makes me happy as a coach because that means they gave 100% effort to get each one of those higher results. State will be fun to compete in after a two-year hiatus.

For the boys, it was Braxton Hinton placing third and recording a PR in the 100 Meters (11.11) and finishing third in the 200 Meters with a time of 22.72. Calvin Hilton took third in the 3200 Meters (9:35.43), and the 4×400 Relay Team of Dylan Thornburg, Cameron Teresi, Teagan O’Callaghan and Braxton Hilton placed second with a time of 3:28.21. The Javelin event saw Curran Moore (170-08) and Konner Dobish (169-02) finish second and third. Kai York-Akiu cleared 6-02 to place sixth in the High Jump competition.

The girl team impressed, too, with Sydney Reagan placing first in the 100 Meters (12.63) and third in the 200 Meters (26.71 PR). Hannah Ayers finished fourth in the 100m Hurdles and set a PR of 16.60. She placed second in the 300m Hurdles and set a personal best of 48.47. Mariah Hill finished third (5-00) in the High Jump competition. Macey Richards (5-00) came in fifth in the event.

Reagan will compete in the 100 and 200 Meters at State. Ayers will run the 300m Hurdles and Hill will perform in the High Jump event.
