CHENEY—The city of Cheney’s Clean Sweep event on Saturday, April 23 saw more than one hundred local residents turn out to help beautify the community. The popular event has been going on in Cheney for more than a decade.
“It was our 15th annual clean up day,” said GIS/Permit Tech Susan Beeman with the Cheney Planning Department. “We had a bout 170 citizens participate. There were several church groups and businesses that put together teams to come out and pick up litter.”
The volunteers met early Saturday morning at Veteran Memorial Park and then headed out to designated areas of town to pick up the litter for approximate three hours. The volunteers returned to the part afterward for lunch.
“Local businesses sponsored the event, donated trash bags and provided sandwiches—one business donated coffee and donuts,” Beeman said.
As part of the cleanup effort, Beeman said locals could drop off old tires at Les Schawb and that ESD 101 offered a prescription drug kick-back in conjunction with Clean Sweep.
“People living within the city’s utility service area could also drop off household chemicals and garbage for free at the recycling center, Beeman said.
She said Clean Sweep event evokes a sense of pride within the community.
“It really does. We had participants from the Key Club at Cheney High School and members of the Delta Chi Fraternity at Eastern take part in Clean Sweep,” Beeman said. “Families with small children took part in it teaching them the importance of picking up litter.”
