CHENEY — Cheney has hit its second rough patch of the season with three losses in the team’s last three games. The Blackhawks dropped two contests to Mt. Spokane by scores of 15-1 and 7-0 on April 12 and 14 and were blown out 17-2 by University on April 15.
The stretch of losses results from the club’s health and the younger inexperienced talent called up to fill in while varsity personnel heals.
“We have a lot of injuries to some key players and have brought up some freshman to give them some experience,” Coach Rob Beamer said. “Losing Quinn (Hubbs) with a back injury has set us back. Hopefully, we will get him back soon and get this ship righted.”
Hubbs is the teams’ ace lefty on the bump, who had turned in a few dominating performances before his injury. He’s tossed two shutouts in 24 innings, has 42 strikeouts, seven bases on balls, and allowed 24 hits and 14 runs in six starts.
The losses drop Cheney to 4-7 in the GSL standings and 4-9 overall.
“Baseball is a grind, and you have to grind every pitch—and if you take a couple of pitches off, bad things can happen,” Beamer said. “The bright spot in all of this is we have five good sophomores and a handful of freshman who can really play, so the future is bright for us.”
The Blackhawks were back at it on Tuesday, April 19.
The game results were not available at press time. Cheney hosts G-Prep at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
