CHENEY— The Blackhawks took one on the chin in a 5-0 loss to Gonzaga Prep on Tuesday, April 12, but came roaring back in dominating fashion, with a 15-1 win over North Central on April 15, to improve to 5-3 in league play.
“We had some hitting problems against one of the better pitchers in the GSL—I think we had four hits so not much opportunity to manufacture anything,” Coach Gary Blake said. “We also committed three errors in the game which led to five unearned runs —three of them came on a bases loaded fly ball that our fielder miss-judged and it cleared the bags.”
The game against the Falcons was a horse of a different color.
“Everything seemed to go right in that one,” Blake said. “We didn’t commit any errors, had 11 hits — hit over .500 as a team and our pitcher, Maddie McDowell, stuck out 10 batters.”
Second baseman Tatum Sloan and outfielder Rhyan Kucirka wielded the big stick for Cheney with both pounding out three hits in three at-bats. Kucirka also had 3 RBI in the lopsided affair.
“The win over Ridgeline puts us at 5-3 in league play and 5-5 overall and puts us in a good solid position tied for third with Ferris and Mead in the GSL standings,” Blake said. “Mt. Spokane and U-High lead the league at 7-1.”
The Blackhawks matched up with the Indians at North Central High on Tuesday, but the game results were not available at press time. Cheney has a three-game home stretch against Lewis & Clark (April 21), Central Valley (April 22) and Mead (April 26) to start the second half of the season. All three games start at 3:30 p.m.
