Cheney Baseball sweeps Ferris

CHENEY— The Blackhawks got back in the win column taking a doubleheader from the Saxons at home on Wednesday, April 6. Cheney shutout Ferris 1-0 in Game 1 and then blew out the visitors from Spokane 13-6 in Game 2.

“Our bats seemed out of sync in the first game, but Quinn Hubbs was dominant in the win, striking out 10 and only allowing a double,” Coach Rob Beamer said. “We had some timely hitting in the second game—and were pretty solid defensively in both games.”

The lone unearned run of the opener came in the bottom of third inning when the Ferris shortstop mishandled a hot shot by Carson Jeffries allowing Clayton Wood to score from third.

The nightcap was scoreless through two innings. Cheney brought three runners across the dish in the top of the third and added one in the top of the fourth to take a 4–0 lead. The Saxons got one back in the bottom of the frame to close the gap to 4–1.

The Blackhawks posted a run in the top of the fifth to make it 5-1 and give Cheney a little more breathing room. Ferris brought three runners home in the bottom of the inning to get win in one, 5-4. A run in the top of the sixth and seven in the top of the seventh blew the game open for the Blackhawks, 13-4. The Saxons made it respectable, 13-6, with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Isaac Nesbitt got the start and the win on the bump going four and a third innings, giving up three runs off three hits, walking three and fanning four Ferris batters. Jamel Chabot, Jed Draper and Eli Chabot had two hits each in the game. The trio combined for four RBI.

The sweep of the doubleheader evens the Blackhawks record at 4-4 in league play and lands Cheney in a tie with Gonzaga Prep for fourth place in the GSL standings.

“We have some kids who are pretty banged up, so a couple of days off (during spring break) will really help us,” Beamer said.

The Blackhawks were back at it on Tuesday, April 12, but the results of the game were not available by press time.
