Cheney City Council approves sidewalk repair project

CHENEY – Walking the streets of Cheney is about to be much safer. The Cheney City Council has approved a plan to repair damaged sidewalks around the city during the regularly scheduled city council meeting on April 12.

The sidewalk project attracted two bidders; Five-Star concrete and WM Winkler Co. A third bidder, Cameron Reilly, was non-responsive.

Five-Star was awarded the contract. The company submitted a bid of $135 per square foot, putting the total price of repairing 300 yards of sidewalk at $44,105.50 (including 8.9 percent tax). Five-Star’s bid came in $5000 less than WM Winkler Co.’s bid.

While most of the repairs are sporadic, according to Public Works Director Todd Ableman, much of them pertain to sidewalks around Summit Drive, a neighborhood located on the northern side of the city above the Cheney High School.

“Right now, we have about 130 square yards identified,” Ableman said.

Much of the work outside of Summit Drive is located “sporadically throughout town,” Ableman said. Sidewalk repairs center around potential tripping hazards. A common source of sidewalk damage, Ableman noted, comes from tree roots that grow close to the surface and push concrete out of place.

Following the damage assessment, the timeline is up to the Five-Star’s schedule to complete the work.

“They try to fit us in the best they can— their very good, very accommodating,” Ableman said.

The contract includes a level of accommodation for the concrete company accepting the bid. Once received, Five-Start concrete will be on call to fix other sidewalk damages that may occur from other city projects throughout the year.

The sidewalk repair project was action item resolution F-022. The council unanimously approved it with seven yes votes.
