Boy's Tennis drops match to University, beats G-Prep

CHENEY- The Blackhawks split matches with University and Gonzaga Prep to open league play last week. Cheney dropped a close, hard-fought 4–3 outing on the road to the Titans on March 29 and rolled past the Bullpups, 5–2 at home on March 31.

"Tuesday's match with U-High gave us two matches that went to three sets and we won them both. That is something I am incredibly proud of our boys for," Coach Dan Estock said. "Aiden (Flanary) and Logan (Konrad) turned things around after losing their first set 0-6. That is something that doesn't happen very often. Most people don't understand the mental stamina required to win a third set-playing three sets is mentally, emotionally, and physically draining."

Estock said he emphasized the importance of mental toughness during practice leading up to the match with the Bullpups.

"We talked about it and had to dig deep against G-Prep with both first doubles(Sam Frenk and Colin Chen) and second doubles(Sam Laughton and Garrett Roettger), and second singles (Hunter Passey) all coming out on top in three-set contests," Estock said. "That says a lot about how our team consistently won those gritty matches."

Estock said he's pleased with the squad's development at this point in the season.

"I am happy with the way our team is playing hard and being students of the game," he said. "We have a lot of take-away lessons that will drive our next few practices.

Cheney is back in action following spring break when the Blackhawks host the Mead Panthers at 3:30 Tuesday afternoon on April 12.
