CHENEY- Back-to-back losses to Mt. Spokane and University High have Cheney at 4-2 in the GSL and 4-4 overall. The Wildcats blew out the Blackhawks 11-1 in Spokane on March 30 and were dealt a 17-8 loss to University High at home on March 31.
Despite the lopsided losses, coach Gary Blake feels the team is still in the thick of things.
"We just need to settle down and play our game," Blake said. "I thought going into the season, these two teams were going to give us our biggest challenge and they did. Spokane is the best hitting team in the league, and we never got on track-we didn't hit like we are capable of -and it was cold and windy, but both teams had to play in the bad weather."
The game against the Titans was tight at the start. University was up 3-0 after two and a half innings were in the books. A two-run shot by Parker Cagle in the bottom of the frame closed the gap to 3–2. But a 12 unanswered Titan runs over the next two innings had Cheney down double-digits, 12–2.
The Blackhawks' bats came alive over the next two innings and the team produced another six runs. Not to be outdone, University hitters posted five more runs on the board and walked off the diamond the victor.
Cheney has the week off for spring break. The team has a golden opportunity to get back in the win column when the Blackhawks return to action with homes games against Gonzaga Prep (2–6, 2–4) on April 12 and Ridgeline (2–4, 2–4) on April 14.
"The Prep game could be interesting," Blake said. "They have a good pitcher, but she has given up more runs this year than I would've expected her to. Our schedule favors us the next couple of weeks as we match up with Ridgeline, North Central and Lewis & Clark, who is at the bottom of the league and have only three wins between them."
