Cheney Boys get nonleague win

CHENEY- Cheney is on a heater, posting its third win in a row on the courts. The Blackhawks latest victim, the Medical Lake Cardinals, had their wings clipped 6-1 at home on Saturday, March 26.

"It was a beautiful day for tennis. Our families came out and supported us in full force and the boys played well," Coach Dan Estock said. "Medical Lake was our last non-league match-up before we start into the GSL schedule next week. I am really happy with the trajectory we are on. We are moving our feet better every time we go out. We are making better choices and playing with more confidence."

Cheney took all four singles matches, dropping just one set along the way. The only loss of the day came at First Doubles that saw Aiden Flanary and Sam Laughton drop a highly contested match, 7-6 (1-7) 6-2, to Tristan Francis and Isaac Barr.

The win moves the Blackhawks to 3-1 in the standings. Cheney opened league play at University High on March 29, but the results were not available at press time. The team hosts Gonzaga Prep on Thursday, March 31 at 3:30 p.m.

The Knights proved to be no match for the Blackhawks as Cheney took every set of competition.

"This match happened to be one of those times where we were comfortably in control from the start to the finish, so I challenged my players to take more risks and go for the more challenging shots in their second sets," Coach Estock said. "There will be days where we are on the other side of this and I just hope we can learn something every time we play."

Estock had high praise for his squad, citing the efforts of several players.

"Brandon Blazekovic at No. 1 singles and our No. 2 doubles team, Sam Laughton and Garrett Roettger are off to an impressive 3-0 start to the season," Estock said. "I also want to make mention of our No. 3 doubles team of Zak Hammersmith and Beau Lieske who played their first varsity match and earned a win.

"From top to bottom every spot on our roster has someone close to their skill level competing for their spot and pushing them to be better. That is really a best-case scenario for a team."
