Blackhawks take two on the diamond

CHENEY—Quinn Hubbs tossed a complete game shutout giving up four hits and striking out 13 Bears and Cheney beat Central Valley 1-0 at home Friday, March 25. It was the second win in as many games as the Blackhawks beat Lewis & Clark 5-3 on March 22 and evened their record at 2-2 on the season.

“Lewis and Clark was a great game where Isaac Nesbitt threw 7 innings and Tate Heuschkel threw 2 scoreless for his first varsity win,” Coach Rob Beamer said. “The team really started to put the team first and it showed in their play against LC and CV.

“The CV game was all about pitching as Sophomore Quinn Hubbs threw a complete game four-hitter on 98 pitches.”

Hubbs heated up early fanning two Bears in the top of the first inning. Cheney threatened in the bottom of the inning, but left two runners stranded. Hubbs looking in mid-season form, gave up a lead off single in the second, but then punched out the next three batters to record his fifth strike out of the game. Consecutive walks with two outs in the home half of the frame put runners on first and second, but Cheney couldn’t take advantage and the game remained scoreless.

The only run of the contest came in the bottom of the fifth. Clayton Wood reached first on an infield single and advanced to second on a Hubbs line drive single to left field. Wood stole third and then was thrown out at home trying to score on a fielder’s choice. Hubbs moved to second on the play and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Isaac Nesbitt reached first on a throwing error by the Bears third baseman and Hubbs scored on the play.

Back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the sixth put a Central Valley runner in scoring position. But a Hubbs KO and a fly out to center field ended the Bears rally. Central Valley went down in order in the top of the seventh, which and sealed the win for the Blackhawks.
