Cheney Police to wear body cameras

CHENEY – Patrol officers with the Cheney Police Department will be sporting body cameras come March 21. The news of the addition to their apparel was announced during a city briefing on Tuesday, March 8.

"The implementation of body-worn cameras is an example of the police department's commitment to being transparent with our community," Chief John Hensley said. Additionally, the officers of the Cheney Police Department have overwhelmingly embraced the use of the cameras and understand their need in policing today."

Henley said officers will be equipped with Axon Body 2 cameras which were purchased through levy lift funding. These cameras shoot High Definition (HD) videos and pictures captured on a DVR that sits atop a standard camera. They are used to improve officer safety, increase evidence quality, reduce civilian complaints and agency liability.

"We entered into a five year agreement with Axon that included new body cameras, new tasers, associated equipment, digital evidence storage, training, etc," said Captain Nate Conley. "The total package was over $182,000."
