CHENEY—The shortened COVID season last year saw the Blackhawks post only one win, a 15-5 shellacking of Ferris. But coach Rob Beamer anticipates the team being better than a.500 ball club in 2022.
“I expect us to compete at a high level and finish in the upper half of the GSL,” Beamer said. “I have six returning players led by Third-Team All-GSL pitcher Isaac Nesbitt.”
Beamer believes pitching will be the teams’ strength this year.
“We have some good young arms in the system,” he said.
The team has a lot of youth, which could pose some problems for Cheney.
“We lack varsity level experience, so that would be our weakness this year.”
The Blackhawks open regular season play with non-league games at West Valley on March 15 and at home against Pullman on March 17 at 3:30. Cheney hosts Lewis&Clark to open league play on March 22. The first pitch is at 4 p.m.
