CHENEY— Cheney boys tennis team fell on hard times last season. The Blackhawks could not fill a complete roster, failed to chalk up a ‘W,’ and finished at the bottom of the pack in the GSL.
Still, coach Dan Estock sees a silver lining, which may bring the team success this season.
“Only six boys turned out for tennis last year—but the good news is five of those six players are returning,” Estock said. “We also have a very nice influx of players, 18 in all, that will allow us to match up better with other schools in our league this year.”
Returning to the fold are seniors Brandon Blazekovic, Sam Laughton, and Alex Bowman, and juniors Colin Chen and Hunter Passey.
However, the bulk of the roster is a group of novice players. But Estock likes what he sees.
“Many of them have little tennis experience, but I’m excited about the level of athleticism they bring to our courts,” Estock said. “It’s an impressive group of guys that have the potential to shake things up in the GSL this season.”
The team has nowhere to go up and will see its first test on March 15, when Cheney travels to West Valley for a nonleague match-up with the Eagles.
