Fourth quarter woes derail Blackhawks Boys and Girls Basketball

Despite playing one of their best games of the year, the Cheney Boys dropped a 59-53 contest Tuesday night, Feb. 1, to strong, physically aggressive Lewis & Clark squad.

The first half of action favored the Blackhaws as they took advantage of the cold shooting and turnover-prone Tigers’ up 28-21 at the half.

Evan Stinson, playing in his first game after having to sit out three due to protocol restrictions, got Cheney off to an early lead scoring 11 of the team’s first 17 points. But for reasons unknown, he didn’t get the ball much after that, and he was held scoreless the rest of the game.

But clutch 3-point shooting by Jakeb Vallance helped expand the Blackhawks lead to 44-32 heading into the final eight minutes of the game.

It was Senior Night for the Tigers who definitely didn’t want to lose in front of their home crowd. A stern talking to by Coach Jim Redmon to start the fourth period fired his players up and the team got back in it.

A trey from Jakeb Vallance put the Blackhawks up 50-41 with 4:23 left to play. The Tigers battled back to take their first lead of the contest on a fast-break layup by Brandon Lewis.

Cheney quickly turned the ball over twice and Lewis & Clark drained a bucket and four free throws in the waning moments to close it out.

Vallance led all scorers with 20 points. Stinson finished with11. Gentz Hilburn scored 17 for the Tigers. Lewis added 14.

GIRLS

The Cheney girl’s played well against the experienced, taller and stronger Tigers, but in the end dropped the game, 40-2a9.

The team had a tough time scoring from the field in the first quarter missing five of six three-point attempts. But they converted five free throws and held a 9-6 lead until until Lewis and Clark’s Katie MacKenzie hit a shot from long range at the buzzer to tie it 9-all.

The Tigers were ice cold from behind the arc in the second period. A strong rebounding effort from junior Shauna and two free throws from Paige Evans kept the Blackhawks in it, down 21-19 at the half.

The teams traded turnovers in the third quarter. Megan Schuller’s 3-pointer with 3:03 on the clock gave Cheney a 27-25 lead. The Tiger’s post Nyan Ankcorn tied it with a put back just before the quarter ended.

The Blackhawks couldn’t buy a much needed 3-pointer in the fourth period, missing five-straight shots from behind the arc, but were only down by eight points with a couple of minutes to go.

Schuller led the Cheney attack with 9 points. Ankcorn finished with 8 points and 11 rebounds for the Tigers.
