Saxon girls top Cheney, 54-29

SPOKANE -- The Ferris Saxon senior basketball players were celebrated royally by their faithful followers on Friday night, Jan. 28.

And the veteran girls team showed their appreciation by putting on a great show and easily defeated the young Cheney Blackhawks, 54-29.

Ferris has six seniors on the roster and it was obvious they had learned much from the coaching staff over the last four years.

Using a tenacious man-to-man helping defense, some half-court traps and lots of steals that led to easy breakaway baskets, the five senior starters raced to a 19–6 first quarter advantage.

Cheney was able to make only 2 baskets and 2 free-throws.

The Blackhawks continue on this rough road in the second quarter, this time only scoring 4 points while the Saxons added 17 to their total.

The Saxons had a 36-10 halftime lead.

The team’s 10 turnovers, including three 30 second shot clock violations in the period were disappointing for Cheney.

The Ferris seniors’ scored 23 first-half point, including 12 by Carroll College bound Elliot Hencz.

Ferris Coach Scott Ward played a mixture of starters and subs in the second- half, and Cheney outscored the Saxons, 19-18.

The teams only scored 2 points apiece in the first 4:05 of the third-quarter, and Cheney added a Shauna Elleott free throw for their 3 quarter points.

The Blackhawks hung on to the ball much better and got off some nice shots in the final period.

The two teams score most of their final quarter points on free throws.

It was all together a tough night for a team with only one senior, and hopefully Senior Nights for the Cheney girls can be as memorable. Elliott led Cheney with 10 points and freshman Kayla Jones scored a game high 13 for the Saxons.

The girls were set to play at Lewis and Clark on Tuesday night, Feb. 1; the results of that game were not available at press time.
