Man arrested for newspaper threats

Newport man being held without bail

NEWPORT – A Pend Oreille County man has been arrested in connection to threats he allegedly made against the Cheney Free Press and Spokesman-Review newspapers.

James E. Gandy, 47, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on Tuesday, Feb. 1.

At press time, he was being held without bail.

Gandy was arrested earlier in the day in Newport on felony harassment charges for allegedly making threats to “burn down” the Cheney Free Press and “kill employees,” records show. Gandy is also accused of making similar threats to the Spokesman-Review.

He was arrested on charges connected to the Spokesman-Review, records show.

The Cheney Free Press complaint has been forwarded to Spokane police for possible additional charges, Cheney Police spokesman Capt. Nate Conley said.

Free Press staff has requested copies of the probable cause statement in the case as well as information on any previous criminal history.

A quick search of state records shows Gandy has a lengthy criminal history.

No further information was available at press time.
