CHENEY – The lady Blackhawks basketball teams faced the Mt. Spokane Wildcats in a home matchup in the Cheney high school main gymnasium on Tuesday January 18. Junior varsity took the court first and fell behind by a large deficit early. However, they persevered and kept fighting to bring it back to a seven point game. However, the Wildcats shut their comeback down and won the game 45 to 38.
Coach Ken Ryan said both teams are working hard every day to win these games and compete in the fourth quarter. When talking about the junior varsity team, Coach Ryan said the pandemic delays forced these kids to lose a lot of their fundamental years playing the game of basketball.
The varsity squad also lost to Mt. Spokane to a score of 41 to 33. The Blackhawks went into half-time only trailing by three points and left the third quarter only down by a single point. However, during the final quarter, the Wildcats were able to steal the momentum back, score 13 fourth quarter points, and take home a conference victory in their rival’s territory.
Coach Ryan said that he’s impressed with his team’s focus and spirit to be competing three out of four quarters is an extremely good sign. “I couldn’t be prouder of them,” Coach Ryan said. Tatum Sloan, junior, guard was one of the leaders on the night with seven points while Macey Richards, sophomore point guard finished with 10 points on the night.
