Three poached bull elk found on private land

SPOKANE COUNTY- Three Elk were found shot and abandoned on private land roughly 200 yards off the corner of Marsh and Adams Road in Fairfield. At approximately 11:30 AM, Jan. 2, Jason Shuman (Fairfield), discovered three elk lying on the snow covered ground. Upon further inspection, Shuman found that two of the elk had been killed, decapitated, and one was left paralyzed and alive with a bullet wound to the spine.

Shuman, who was out riding UTVs and hunting coyotes with a friend, calls this incident “disgusting and saddening”. All three elk were found within 100 yards of each other on the same day.

A game warden was called to the scene and the incident has been reported. Despite the efforts to speak with the game warden, the Whitman County Gazette has been unable to get any information and statement from the warden.

Shuman, a local hunter who frequents this area, reported that a similar incident involving white tale buck happened last year within 5 miles from the location where the elk were found. “As a hunter, I feed my family with that elk. We hunt because we enjoy the meat and experience of being outside. Individuals who come and waste animals like that are disgusting”, said Shuman.

This incident has been filed with the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife. There is no further information regarding the incident that has been shared with the public.
