Inslee backs off vaccine order in emergencies
OLYMPIA – Gov. Jay Inslee has backed off his vaccination requirement for hospitals and other medical facilities when there is a need to address potentially life-threatening situations.
Under an update to Proclamation 21-14 last week, Inslee opened the door for acute care, long-term care, corrections, rehabilitation and behavioral health in-patient facilities to hire unvaccinated “contractors” in emergency situations.
Those situations must be “unanticipated, discrete, temporary and likely to result I death or bodily harm if the contractors’ prompt actions are not taken,” a statement from the Governor’s Office said.
The facility’s managers must first make an effort to engage vaccinated contractors, the statement said.
Sheriff’s Office gets new patches
SPOKANE – The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office will begin replacing its shoulder patch with a retro design from a logo used in the mid-to-late 1950s.
The change comes from a desire for a new design that connects with the agency’s history. The current shoulder patch was implemented in 1972.
The new patch incorporates the 1950s logo representing longstanding dedication and service to the county while ushering in a new era and generation of deputies with pride and professionalism, officials said.
These new patches were approved for service last week, with full implementation occurring over the next few months.
Medical Lake Dollars for Scholars
MEDICAL LAKE – Steven Meltzer, the President of the Board for Medical Lake Dollars for Scholars said the group has raised over $41,000 in scholarship funds that were awarded to 27 students this year. The pandemic hit the group hard in 2020 and they were only able to raise $18,500 when COVID first hit.
The group was formed 20 years ago and this brings the grand total to over $648,000 that has been awarded to 847 students in the Medical Lake community. The board president said the group was able to overcome the struggles of the pandemic and having to cancel the two biggest fund raisers for the past two years.
“The community has really showed up to back our group as well as other organizations we have partnered with,” Meltzer said, “the community has really come together to help others overcome challenges.”
The group is currently running a new holiday fundraiser through December 11, the “Holiday Hopes and Dreams Wreath Raffle.” Meltzer said 13 local businesses are participating, and the winner will be announced on December 11, and the business that sells the most raffle tickets will get to choose the scholarship recipient for the raised funds.
