Sugar Mamas to offer baked goods in Cheney

CHENEY — A new bakery has opened in the city just in time for the holidays.

Sugar Mamas Bakery recently opened at 1831 First St., owner Stacia Harrington said.

Harrington, 34, is a long-time resident who said she wanted a catchy name for the bakery.

“It (Sugar Mamas) was just a clever name my husband and I came up with,” she said. “When thinking of what to call it, you know my first reaction was to obviously have sugar in there... and he came up with Sugar Mamas.”

Harrington said she decided to open Sugar Mamas about a year ago and she was able to start the business without any loans.

“I also have a full-time job as a general manager of a retail store and did not want to have any real overhead having such a small business like this one,” Harrington said, who runs the bakery with her mother Tammy Harrington. “I love baking. My mom loves baking. We both grew up baking with our mothers constantly.”

Although she is awaiting signage, community support has been amazing, she said, noting she’s surprised about the strong support.

Business has been really good, she said.

“I love the people here,” Harrington said. “I love the camaraderie of Cheney, I love that is a bigger town, but still has the small town feel.” she said.

Harrington said she has gotten great feedback.

“They love the items that we have here … they love the different array of items that we have available,” she said.

She said customers also have commented that they love the eclectic design of the shop.

The bakery specializes in macaroons, but offers a items like cakes, pies, cinnamon rolls, chocolates, prepackaged snacks, German desserts, chips, Panini sandwiches, coffees, Italian sodas, immunity smoothies and custom cakes.

“We have very special brownies, it’s an old family recipe that’s been in the works for a while, we make cinnamon rolls, and we offer fresh bread.” Harrington said, noting customers can purchase country white and honey wheat.

She also offers gluten-free foods.

Along with a variety of desserts and drinks, the shop has a large assortment of candles, wax melts, bath bombs, bath salts, soaps and seasonal items.

“I would love to see this be the hip area for people to come buy their sweets,” she said, adding her products are “homemade,” and not from “a big factory.”

The shop does not offer an indoor dining option, but offers pick-up and delivery, she said. It is open 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
