Funding sought for colored water problem

It’s a chance, an exhaustive guessing game. What color will my water be today? Is it orange or clear as a spring? That’s the tired problem that many cheney residenst have faced this fall as construction and fires usage have caused more water to be brought through the old pipes, causing rust to be stirred and to eventually make it’s way out of the tap. Discolored water is not a health risk, insists Paul Schmidt, director of public works. But, it is disconcerning to fill up a drinking glass with Kool-Aid colored water. And it’s even worse if it happens with a load of whites in the washer.

Garden Springs students find haven from storm at Windsor

Garden Springs Elementary students received an unexpected wintertime field trip –well, sort of. The small schoolhouse at the northeast corner of the Cheney school district fell victim to the icestorm’s electricity disabling grip. Nearby Windsor Elementary was fully functional and the district decided to bus the Garden Springs refugees over to the larger, more modern Windsor building. What could have been a disorienting, uncomfortable situation for the Garden Springs kids turned into a fun, monotony breaking excursion.

American Legion Post 72 Approves Financial Plans

Cheney Post 72 of the American Legion met last Thursday evening and made a number of significant financial commitments. The annual Legion scholarship for a graduating Cheney High senior was funded and plans made for distributing application forms soon after the first of the year. Then the decision was made to sponsor two boys for next year’s Boys State instead of the one boy previously sponsored. This decision was in large part due to Mark Robinson’s interesting report of the worth while activities of this past year. Mark and the two girls who went to Girls State reported on their trips at last month’s meeting.

Hattie Conley Celebrates 86th Birthday- Bowling

Ponce De Leon did not find the Fountain of Youth, but apparently Hattie Conley has in Cheney. Last Thursday was her 86th birthday. She couldn’t have a quiet get together with her friends on that day to celebrate the occasion because Thursday was her day for bowling. Hattie, who bowls in the Koffee Kup Keglers league and substitutes in another league every week at Cheney Bowl, could be the senior active bowler in the United States. The oldest bowler reported is an 82-year old woman from Boise, Idaho.
