FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE — Wellpinit High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets visited Fairchild Air Force Base on Oct. 21 to learn first-hand about the different Air Force careers.
“It was an awesome opportunity for the kids,” retired U.S. Army Maj. Eric Cusick, the school’s senior ROTC instructor, said. “During class, we only showcase a small portion of the military, so giving the students the opportunity to see how an Air Force base operates really shows them possible careers and how portions of the military operate as a whole.”
Wellpinit High School’s students are mostly American Indian and were able to interact with airmen who have similar cultural affiliations.
“With diversity and inclusion being an important topic, to not only the Air Force but also the nation, this allowed us to showcase our star performing airmen that come from different cultural backgrounds and make a lasting impact on our community,” 92nd Air Refueling Wing Cmdr. Col. Cassius Bentley said.
The students toured the base, learning about air traffic control, the 36th Rescue Squadron, military dogs and explosive ordnance disposal.
“Being able to see the students interact with all of the airmen and the various career fields was a rewarding experience for not only the students but also the instructors that accompanied,” Cusick said. “The students had a blast interacting with the different career fields at Fairchild.”
