Letter to the Editor
It is not too late to submit your views to the Legislative Redistricting Commission. Citizens should get involved in the 10-year redistricting of the state based on the 2020 Census.
Proposals for state districts are due by Friday, Oct.22, and your very important opinion can easily be sent by email and video, as well as by mail to [email protected]. Some of the four maps being considered put Cheney in the 9th District, not as it is presently in the 6th District, thus joining Cheney with the rural areas south as far as Pullman and not in Spokane County.
Important points to consider:
Cheney is contiguous with Spokane. We are in Spokane County.
Buses run to and from Spokane and Cheney all day. Staff, students and residents use buses because they work or live in Spokane and may attend classes at Spokane-area colleges or universities.
Eastern Washington University has a Spokane Campus.
The boundary for the Cheney School District abuts Spokane districts.
The closest hospital is in Spokane.
Most Cheney residents shop and enjoy restaurants in Spokane.
Entertainment at the Bing Crosby Theater and Martin Woldson Theatre, as well as the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture and sporting venues (Go Zags!) are frequented by Cheney residents. In addition, Spokane residents attend Cheney events, concerts and lectures.
Cheney has more in common with Spokane than rural areas. Traveling far to meetings is likely to reduce participation and interest by Cheney residents.
Thus, Cheney is well-suited to be in the 6th Legislative District. Cheney residents often travel to Spokane, partake of facilities in Spokane and identify with and know people in Spokane.
Remember redistricting lasts 10 years. Contact the commission now.
