Man Killed in Recent Collision Identified

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – The Spokane County Medical Examiner has identified the man hit and killed Sept. 29 near the intersection of West Westbow and South Spotted roads as Christopher Goles, 47.

Records show Goles was involved in an earlier crash with his Honda sport utility vehicle, called a tow truck and was attempting to cross the road about 10 p.m. when he was hit.

The driver of the eastbound Subaru noticed the tow truck on the north side of Westbow Road, officials said. Goles then stepped out in front of his vehicle, but the driver could not stop and struck Goles.

The driver stopped and tried life-saving techniques as directed by a dispatcher, records show. Arriving deputies also administered CPR.

But Goles succumbed to his injuries and was died at the scene , records show.

County has a new health officer

SPOKANE – Spokane County has a new health officer.

The Spokane County Board of Health unanimously approved hiring Dr. Francisco Velázquez during a meeting Oct. 6.

His selection follows a request from Dr. Amelia Clark, who terminated the employment of previous health officer, Dr. Bob Lutz in October 2020.

Turnbull plans prescribed burns

CHENEY – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will conduct prescribed burns at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge from late October through February.

Prescribed fire is a management technique used to improve wildlife habitat, forest health and to reduce the damaging impacts from catastrophic wildfire, officials said.

Prescribed burning activities should have little to no effect on access to the majority of Refuge public use areas, although smoke may be visible in the nearby cities of Cheney, Spangle and Malden.

Boy arrested for touching girl at high school

CHENEY – A local boy was arrested Monday, Oct. 11, and referred to juvenile court after allegedly touching a local 15-year-old girl.

According to police records, the 17-year-old boy whose name has yet to be released was arrested on a fourth-degree assault charge.

The incident occurred at Cheney High School, 460 N. Sixth St., records show.

Woman uses crystal goblet to bash roommate

CHENEY – A local woman is facing charges after allegedly attacking her roommate Friday, Oct. 15.

According to a police report, Haylee Sell was arrested and charged with first-degree assault-domestic violence.

She allegedly used a large “crystal goblet” to hit her female roommate over the head, records show. The women share an apartment at Willow Wood Village, 111 College Hill Street.
