Cheney harriers compete in Richland

CHENEY – The Blackhawks boys junior and senior cross country team finished inside the Top 10 of the 52nd annual Max Jensen Richland Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 9.

Meanwhile, the girls junior-varsity team ran to eighth place while the boys freshmen and sophomore harriers topped out at No. 12.

The junior and senior boys finished ninth with 210 team points in the 3-mile event. Kamiakin won the event with 19 points, followed by Central Valley with 76 points for second. Hermiston, Ore., Pullman and Wenatchee rounded out the top five with 126 team points, 137 and 144, respectively.

Junior Noah Hinton paced the Cheney boys with a time of 18:17.26, good enough for a 23rd-place finish.

In 56th, junior Teagan O’Callaghan had a time of 19:15.57, and in 61st, Logan Burnett had a time of 19:28;74.

The fourth fastest Blackhawk was junior A.J. Hammel, 73rd with a time of 19:45.08.

The freshman and sophomore boys finished 12th in team standings with 286 points in the 3-mile event. Kamiakin won that event with 58 team points, followed by Seattle Prep with 66, Richland with 113, West Valley (Yakima) with 165.

Cheney’s youngest underclassmen were led by sophomore Zack Cox, who finished 37th with a time of 18:59.08.

Sophmore Trenten Franz was 48th and fresman Max Hemenway was 49th with times of 19:11.26 and 19:13.23, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 5 for Cheney are sophomore Elijah Wright, 92nd, with a time of 20:13.32; and freshman Damien Mager-Reeser, 105th, with a time of 20:36.91.

In girls junior-varsity, Cheney girls, paced by six freshmen, finished the meet with 251 points and eighth-place in a 3-mile event.

Kamiakin won the girls junior-varsity event with a team score of 78, followed by Seattle Prep in second with 82 and Wenatchee third with 102.

Cheney freshman Emily Axtell had the best individual placing for the Blackhawks, taking ninth in a time of 22:21.41.

In 38th place, freshman teammate Arya Syrie finished in 23:29.71, the second fastest of time for the Blackhawks girls.

Rounding out the Top 6 girls from Cheney are freshmen Sarah Bolstad, 75th, with 24:55.48; Kate Lathen, 78th, with 25:00.02; Rylan Rajewski, 85th, with 25:26.84; and Claire Davis, 92nd, with 25:51.60.
