CHENEY – The two high school boys football teams on the West Plains both lost Friday night, Oct. 1.
The Mead Panthers rolled over the Blackhawks, 44-0, in Cheney in a Greater Spokane League matchup. And the Cardinals fell, 49-8, to the Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) Eagles at home in Medical Lake.
Mead (2-2) racked up 132 yards on the ground on 33 carries, often running off the right tackle.
The Panthers were led on the ground by Schuyler Harkness, who rushed 9 times for 53 yards. Teammate Colby Price carried 8 times for 37 yards and Justice had 9 carries for 18 yards.
For the Blackhawks, Owen Scott carried the ball 15 times for 44 yards to lead the Cheney ground attack. Blackhawks teammate Jermmiah Hubbard added 7 carries for 17 yards.
In negative yards, James Guske, Micah Ragaza-Bouraassa and Jackson Talarico all carried once, losing 1, 3 and 8 yards, respectively.
At the end of the night, the Blackhawks only recorded 49 total yards on 25 carries.
Blackhawks quarterback Scott also led the air attack, completing 3-of-16 passes for 9 total yards.
The only forward yards receiving came on 2 receptions by Joshua Bingham, who advanced the ball a total of 10 yards. A pass to Curran Moore was completed, but it lost a yard.
On the other side of the ball, Mead's air attack was almost unstoppable, with Colby Danielson completing 11-of-12 passes for 241 yards. Backup quarterback Ryker Hurd added 1-of-1 for an additional 6 yards.
Their favorite receivers were Max Workman, who caught 3 passes for 102 years, Price who with 2 receptions for 49 yards and Nolan Braun with 2 catches for 45 yards.
Total, Mead gained 247 yards in the air while holding Cheney to just 9 yards.
Mead dominated the game from the start, racking up 20 points in the first quarter and never looking back. By halftime, the Panthers led, 37-0.
Overall, Mead posted 20 first downs. Cheney finished with six, but didn't get its first down until halfway through the second quarter.
This week, Cheney will host the Ridgeline Falcons (0-4) for Homecoming.
Ridgeline, a new high school in Liberty Lake, does not have any seniors on the team.
In Medical Lake (1-2), the outcome was similar with undefeated Nine Mile Falls running up 35 points in the first quarter.
Lakeside (0-5) came into the game ranked No. 8 in Class 1A football.
The Eagles got on the board first with a 40-yard pass from Cole Hunsaker to Dawson Tobeck with 7:59 left in the first quarter. Sadahiro Patterson made the point-after.
Patterson would add a 2-yard touchdown run and another PAT with 6:05 left in the quarter to take a 14-0 lead.
In the quarter, the Eagles added 21 more points on a 14-yard Tobeck run, a 5-yard Calvin Mikkelson run and a 10-yard pass from Tobeck to Hunsaker as time expired in the quarter.
Mikkelson scored again on a 10-yard pass from Hunsaker in the second quarter to take a 42-0 lead into halftime.
Jesse James scored for the Eagles in the fourth quarter with Patterson kicking the point-after in for a 49-0 lead.
Medical Lake got on the board with 24 seconds left in the game when Jalijah Meacham lofted a 26-yard pass to Carson Tappero. Tappero added a 2-point conversion with the game ending at 49-8.
Joe Griffey led Medical Lake's ground attack, carrying the ball 7 times for 25 yards. Meacham added 5 carries for 14 yards and Tappero carried 7 times, but lost 12 yards.
Meacham was also Medical Lake's top receiver, grabbing one pass for 26 yards and a touchdown.
Cardinal Joe Oliver caught one pass for 12 yards and Griffey caught one for minus-4 yards.
Lakeside's Jesse James led all rushers with 4 carries for 59 yards, followed by teammates Oz Melzer with 3 carries for 41 yards and Tornio Yamada with 3 carries for 33 yards.
Medical Lake's Tappero completed 3-of-13 passes for 34 yards and a touchdown in the game.
For the Eagles, Hunsaker completed 9-of-14 for 177 yards and three touchdowns, while Mikkelson added one pass for 15 yards.
The Eagles top receiver was Mikkelson with 3 catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. Teammate Tobeck had 3 catches for 55 yards and 2 touchdowns as Patterson caught 1 for 51 yards.
The Eagles offense racked up 369 yards and 13 first downs in the game. Meanwhile, the Cardinals had a total offense of 61 yards and 5 first downs.
On Friday, Medical Lake will host the No. 1-ranked Class 2B football team, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague.
The Broncos (4-0) are coming off a decisive 20-0 win over Jenkins (Chewelah) on the Cougars' home field.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
