Blackhawks boys take fourth in Battle for the 509

CHENEY – The Blackhawks boys took fourth-place in the fourth Battle for the 509 cross country meet Saturday, Oct. 2, at Fairways Golf Course.

The boys finished with 187 points, behind No. 1 Mead with 74 points, Lewis and Clark with 121 and Coeur d'Alene with 133.

Meanwhile, the local girls finished in 20th overall with 447 points in their division.

Lewis and Clark won the girls event with 57 team points, followed by Post Falls, Idaho, with 99 and Sandpoint, Idaho, with 147.

In the boys varsity 5,000 meter race, junior Adam Estock paced the Blackhawks, finishing 19th overall with a time of 16:44.47. Senior Finnegan Syrie came in 31st overall, with a time of 16:58.53.

And senior Luke Hurd was the Blackhawks next fastest runner, finishing 40th with a time of 17:09.97.

Other Cheney boys finishing in the Top 100 in the race included freshman Calvin Hilton, 45th, in 17:17.46; senior Dylan Thornburg, 52nd, in 17:21.72; freshman Brayden Martin, 85th, in 17:43.15; and Cameron Frenk, 86th, in 17:43.77.

For the Blackhawks girls, junior Samantha Habegger led the way, finishing 31st with a time of 19:55.44.

She was the only local girl to break into the Top 100 in the 5,000-meter race.

Junior Mika Corniel was the second-fastest girl for Cheney, finishing 119th with a time of 23:16.34; and freshman Emily Axtell was third fastest, finishing 129th in 23:54.71.

In junior-varsity, Cheney boys ran to a seventh-place finish, paced by junior Joshua McRitchie, who took 10th in a time of 18:11.41.

In girls junior-varsity, Cheney junior runners Nia Guest and Tenaya Belsby finished 30th and 31st with times of 23:31.23 and 23.31.43, respectively. They posted the best times for local girls in that event.

In the 5,000-meter freshman girls combine, Cheney runners took second place with 43 points. Richland won that event with 15 points.

The top girls running in that event for the Blackhawks were Kate Lathen and Arya Syrie, who finished 22nd and 23rd with times of 25:14.35 and 25:20.14, respectively.

The Cheney girls middle school team was led by sixth-grader Abigail Scharosch and seventh-grader Ella Smith, who took 27th and 28th places with respective times of 11:42.54 and 11:43.82 in the 1.5-mile event.

In the freshman boys 5,000-meter event, Cheney's Damien Mager-Reeser led the Blackhawks with a time of 21:04.05 to finish 35th. Mason Castleberry took 55th in 21:58.34 and Holland Hurd was 61st in 22:28.99.

In the 1.5-mile middle school boys race, Cheney seventh-grader Samuel Hilton finished fourth in 9:11.54. His finish was the highest of any Cheney runner in their division.

Cheney Middle School's next fastest runner was eighth-grader Liam Frantzich, 15th in 9:58.03.
